Tarjeta sanitaria

If you’ve already gotten your SS number, and you have the right to public health care, this is how you go about registering yourself in the system.

First of all, this is all based on your work situation.

If you have a legal contract in Spain, if you are alta in SS, then you can take the sheet of paper you got when you applied for your SS number, Resolución: Asignación de número de seguridad social o número de afiliación, to your local centro de salud along with your TIE to apply for the card there. Since I didn’t have a legal work contract when I applied for this, I am not 100% sure of the documents you need, but I would assume you would need: la resolución, your actual TIE, and possibly your work contract. But if you are already alta in SS, you shouldn’t have to prove you’re working because it’s already in the system.

If you do NOT have a legal contract in Spain, if you are NOT alta in SS, you must register yourself as a beneficiary of your partner with whom you have pareja de hecho or are married to in order to have access to the public health system. For this, you must make an appointment and go to your local SS office. As far as I understand, your partner must apply for this so they must physically go into the SS office. You can go too, but you can’t go without them.

You need the following things:

  • Your actual TIE plus a copy (front & back)
  • Your partner’s actual DNI plus a copy (front & back)
  • The application form filled out by the Spanish citizen plus a copy
  • Copy of your pareja de hecho document

The actual process of them doing the paperwork took maybe 15 minutes. You will leave with a document that says documento acreditativo del derecho a asistencia sanitaria at the top. It will then have the name of the Spanish citizen and your name will be in a table under beneficiarios del asegurado.

Then, you take that document and your TIE to your local centro de salud, no appointment needed, and they will do the paperwork to submit you officially into the system. This took about 20 minutes. They will assign you a doctor and print you off a sheet saying you’ve been registered in the base de datos of the public health system. This paper also has your information and the information of your doctor.

  1. Hello! I work as an auxiliar and have pareja de hecho with ,y boyfriend in Galicia. I just made my appointment at the social security office but I’m curious what I should do first: Get social security number or the health card; or do you do both at the same office/time?

    1. So first you need to get your SS number in order to get your health card. First you’ll go to the SS office to get your number. Make sure they give you two documents. 1) Reoslución: Asignación de número de seguridad social o número de afiliación. 2) Documento acreditativo del derecho a asistencia sanitaria. The second document I had to get with my boyfriend – he had to actually ask for it because it’s putting me under his name in social security. The “asegurado del derecho a la asistencia sanitaria pública” will be your boyfriend. Once you have this document (the 2nd), you take that to your local abulatorio and they’ll assign you a doctor and get you a card (although be prepared to wait forever to get your card in the mail!). Hope this answers your questions!

    1. Hi Trevor! I’m not 100% sure as I didn’t have a work contract when I went through this process. I would call to check just to make sure!
